Monty

Lord Montague - Furry Master Of All He Surveys

Monty was the first chinchilla I bought - I stumbled across him cuddled up in a big, furry ball, fast asleep in a Pets At Home. It was love at first sight and he was "Monty" at first sight too.

I put a deposit on him and took a book on chinchillas home to read over night, having discussed chinchilla care with the manageress who had 3 chinchillas of her own. I discovered that Monty was bred by a well-respected NCS Breeder who has now retired from chinchilla breeding.

I came home with Monty in March 1997 and he has ruled The Manor with a furry paw ever since. He is a real character and makes his wants very clear - my parents bought him a parrot bell and he uses it to get my attention when required. He pushes it with his paw and stops when I go to see what he wants (a bit like a reverse "Pavlov's Dogs" scenario!)

Monty used to live with Kiera in their specially adapted Thickets Cage (due to Kiera's bumblefoot). As befitting their exalted status, Lord Montague and Lady Kiera got everything first - treats, exercise (not that either of them did much beyond pottering about), and tickles. Sadly, Kiera died in Spetember 2006 and Monty was obviously missing her company.

Monty now lives with his new standard lady who is affectionately named "Pudding". They are a laid back couple and took to each other with no problems at all.

They can ususally be found snuggled up on their carpeted shelf or (underfloor) heated towel, sleeping peacefully.

Monty hates having his photo taken - he sulks when I get the camera out and usually hides and looks incredibly grumpy.
